Our thanks to you as parents for supporting your child's membership in the South Texas Youth Symphony. We understand how busy the lives of young people are today and the myriad extracurricular activities available.
As an organization, we believe strongly in the power and force for good that music represents in the life of young people as well as in the community as a whole, not to mention the obvious and more easily measurable benefits that active participation in musical activities can provide to students.
We are proud of the accomplishments of members of the STYS and look forward over the coming years to watch graduates of our orchestras do great and wonderful things in the world.
But to come back to the here and now- as parents there are several topics that need to be discussed to ensure a fruitful and positive experience for all members of our orchestras.
Costs associated with our youth orchestras are assumed by the South Texas Symphony Association, Inc, a nonprofit corporation that is the parent organization of all activities of the VSO & C and their related education programs. To ensure the continued existence of our youth orchestras we absolutely depend upon the tuition that is required of all members. These fees are exceptionally reasonable. For a comparison, many youth orchestras have annual tuition and fees well in excess of $1,000. The $250 annual tuition we charge covers only a portion of our costs in continuing these programs that do so much good for members.
We ask that you pay your tuition in a timely manner, either in an annual lump sum of $250 at the beginning of the season, or in two installments of $125 by the Sunday, September 22nd Rehearsal at the Temporary Music Building from 3 - 5:30 pm.
Scholarships are available to those with true financial hardship and will be considered on a case by case basis. It is our goal to have every worthy student participate regardless of their family's financial status.
Nonpayment of fees will result in your child's participation as a member of the orchestra suspended until those tuition fees are paid.
Taking on the responsibility of membership in our orchestras requires a commitment of time in attending all rehearsals. We understand that other activities may interfere at times, and family, church and school obligations may at times require your child's presence during regularly scheduled rehearsals. However, we ask your assistance in ensuring that your son or daughter attends as many rehearsals and concerts as possible. They are not only letting themselves down by not meeting commitments they have made, but they are letting down every other member of the ensemble by missing rehearsals unnecessarily.
Our director, Lucas Darger, needs assistance on a weekly basis in ensuring our rehearsals run smoothly and all orchestra events are planned and staffed appropriately. During this upcoming 2013-14 season, we will need your assistance in forming a Parent's Organization that will give critical aid that allows us to meet our mission of providing a unique educational experience to our students. Please contact VSO office at (956) 661-1615 if you are interested in volunteering.
