Concert I
Tragic Love Overtures
Dr. Peter Dabrowski will open his twelfth season as maestro with the Valley Symphony Orchestra performing at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance on Thursday, October 4th. The pre-Concert reception starting at 7:30 PM will be hosted by Cornerstone and Feldmans, which will include light hors d'oeuvres and wine. The orchestra will perform Rossini's Semiramide Overture, a tragic overture of a Babylonian queen, Semiramide, who murders her husband with the help of her then lover Assur. Later Semiramide falls deeply in love with the much younger warrior, Arsace, not realizing her lover was actually her son hidden from her at birth. When the high priest tells Arsace the truth, he takes out after Assur with a knife, only to miss his mark during the struggle and strike and kill his love, Semiramide, which ended in elevating him to the throne. The second piece, Brahms' Concerto for Violin & Cello, op. 102, A minor, will highlight two very talented musicians, Daniel Andai, violin and Tido Jansen, cello. This was the last concerto piece Brahms composed as a rekindling gesture to his longtime friend, Joachim. Joachim, who divorced his wife accusing her of cheating, and Brahms, attempting to help the situation, by writing a letter of innocence on her behalf, severed their thirty year friendship. The double concerto, unusual for its time, was a means of Brahms asking forgiveness from Joachim and asserting the memories of their good times. The third and final piece, Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet, an overture of two young lovers caught between their families' feud resulting in their tragic deaths.
